Asbestos Physical Exam

Asbestos is a naturally-occurring fibrous silica material. It is quite useful in manufacturing due to its heat-, electrical-, and corrosion-resistance.  These properties can also make it toxic in high concentrations.

Microscopic asbestos fibers cause inflammation and scarring leading to asbestos-related diseases including:

  • Asbestosis- lung scarring caused by inflammation
  • Pleural disease- pleural (lining of lung) thickening that increases the work of breathing
  • Lung cancer- tumor in the lung air passages
  • Mesothelioma- cancer of the pleura

OSHA Asbestos medical surveillance program requires that all employees exposed to asbestos above the permissible exposure limit (0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter of air) be evaluated and tested by a physician on at least an annual basis.  Our exam includes all components required by OSHA:

  • Chest X-Ray w/ B-read
  • Pulmonary Function Test (NIOSH-certified)
  • Medical Exam
  • Review of medical history and occupational exposure
  • Completion of respiratory disease questionnaire
